Unit Description and Expectations

 

Creating an Ensemble

In a drama classroom it is essential that students work together. In this introductory unit students will learn the value of collaboration and the essence of an ensemble through a variety of exercises. Students will be introduced to the creative process and the critical analysis process, two key components of the course.

 

An Actor’s Tools

This unit examines all the different skills or tools that actors use. Beginning with the body, students will explore tableau, blocking and pantomime. The students will then move on to examining the qualities and characteristics of the voice. Students will complete a performance task that reflects the development of skills studied in class.

 

Improvisation

In this unit students will explore the art of improvisation. Students will learn how to listen to one another, make quick decisions, use their imagination, and work collaboratively. Students will complete a collaborative performance task.

 

Theatre History

Students will research and explore a variety of theatrical styles (genres, time periods and forms). A series of workshops will be conducted to help students understand the evolution of theatrical styles and to make comparisons among these styles, examining closely the different conventions and theatrical devices used in each. Students will complete performance exercises in each workshop and conduct a group research project on a style of their choice.

 

Character Creation

Students will examine both internal and external approaches to creating character by participating in character-building exercises and studying the Stanislavsky method. Students will the skills of character analysis learned to complete a performance task. During this unit students will also conduct research on a career in performing arts and present their career research report to the class.

 

Culminating Task - Docu Drama

The culminating task for this course will be a showcase of all the skills learned throughout the course. In groups students will develop a Docu-Drama that presents different perspectives of a central theme using a variety of performance methods and technical elements.

 

Student Portfolio (Ongoing)

Throughout the semester students will create a portfolio that showcases their development and achievements in the course. It will be the primary vehicle for students to demonstrate their learning, to deepen and extend the drama, and a stimulus for reflection. It is the students responsibility to obtain a suitable binder/folder for his/her portfolio and to maintain a high-level of professionalism in the presentation and organization of it.
